NY based artist, Kaia Peterka, focuses on the tension between the surface and what's beneath, destruction and survival, and the nature of becoming. Her work with layers of paint and texture, hinting but obscuring what existed before, reflects the complexity of identity and truth.
Her visceral process of painting without a plan and using various tools to paint- brushes, palette knives, repurposed items, or her own hands- gives her work a raw, emotional quality and allows her an intimacy with the canvas. This freedom of approach and decisions about what is covered up and what breaks through is part of the work- it is immediate, it evolves, it never has to be just one thing.
