Francois BANCON
Digital photography, Digital -painting-, mainly working in China, represented by TNT Contemporary-Shenzhen.
I tend to say about my work that it is 100% photographic, meaning that photography must enter in this century and stop (a bit) to play with its own stereotypes. Nothing here about any “utilitarian”, “documentary” or “journalistic” approaches. The social media network(s) manage very well the “patho-emotional” aspect of the image.
It seems to me that the artist must be more rigorous, more humble yet radical when it comes to the “subject”.
These series follow a long (almost 25 years) “on the field” photo shooting (mainly in Asia) in order to build a kind of data bank that will become the structural elements of the photo production. More than 1200 characters to date, usually shot from the back since this is about creating Human Symbols not portraits.
The research is about the “identity” as human beings immersed in the city and in their own intimacy. There is only HUMAN as Nietzsche told us… this work is all about magnifying the human knowing that there is no “beyond”, no “above”).
These pictures are usually big sized (from 110”x110” to 78”x78”) but size can be reduced according to the environment. All photographic elements have been shot by myself, the process here goes from shooting to editing and production.
