I'm Bernice Cooke, and I've been wielding a paintbrush since the nineties. My artistic journey began as a gentle exploration, but it soon evolved into a profound passion that would define my creative path.
Initially, I ventured into the world of the candle market, where I merged my innate love for creativity with my budding artistry. However, this early experimentation was just a stepping stone toward a more profound calling. In 2021, I made a transformative leap, fully embracing the title of a professional artist. This pivotal moment marked the genesis of a new chapter in my artistic career, one entirely focused on capturing the intricate beauty of buildings.
My art draws inspiration from an unwavering love of history and a profound connection with architectural wonders. The essence of my work is rooted in this relationship. My trusted companions in the creative process are pen and watercolour, which I use to meticulously render each building stone by stone. The therapeutic nature of this process finds its synergy with the fluidity of watercolour, enhancing every painting with a distinctive charm.
A significant milestone in my artistic journey was the organisation of my first solo exhibition, "Stone Tape," held within the enchanting courtyard of Portumna Castle. This exhibition provided a glimpse into the profound spiritual connection between humanity and the stories embedded within the very fabric of buildings. It was a testament to my deep-rooted interest in history and my desire to unveil its narratives through my art.
Following on from that exhibition, I had the opportunity to showcase my next body of work, "Stone Tape II - The Westmeath Tale," in the beautiful Atrium in Mullingar, followed by the Civic Building in Athlone. These exhibitions allowed me to continue exploring the fascinating interplay between people and the architectural treasures that surround us.
Currently, I am diligently working on my next collection, which will encompass the beautiful buildings of County Offaly. This new endeavour promises to be an exciting chapter in my artistic journey, and I can't wait to share it with you as we continue to unravel the hidden stories concealed within the structures that hold a piece of history within their walls. Together, we will explore the captivating interplay of history and artistry.
