Laura Canal (Barcelona, 1993) is an abstract painter based in Barcelona. Primarily self-taught, she complemented her formation with studies in figurative drawing at the Barcelona Academy of Art and further training in the studio of artist Marta Durán. This dual path—between self-directed exploration and academic rigor—shaped her sensitivity to both material experimentation and the expressive potential of form.
Over the past years, Canal has exhibited her work internationally in diverse contexts, including Haba Gallery in Barcelona, Spain (residency and group exhibition), the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, Greece, Cercle Artístic Sant Lluc in Barcelona, the Art Fair at Le Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France, Parcus Gallery in Aistersheim, Austria, and W Soul in Munich, Germany. These experiences have allowed her to connect with audiences across Europe and to situate her practice within a global dialogue on contemporary abstraction.
Her artistic practice revolves around the intersections of materiality, environment, and human presence. She works with organic and residual substances gathered directly from nature—sand, soil, ash, and fragments of discarded plastic—materials that bear the memory of transformation and the tension between fragility and resilience. Often, these elements are subjected to fire, erosion, or chemical reactions, processes that reveal textures, fissures, and unexpected surfaces. By pushing matter to its limits, Canal creates works that are both tactile and conceptual, evoking cycles of decay and renewal.
At the heart of her practice lies a concern with ecological awareness. The incorporation of residual and often overlooked fragments highlights the traces of human impact on natural systems while transforming them into spaces for reflection and dialogue. Her canvases, layered and textured, can be read as landscapes marked by both destruction and rebirth—echoing questions of sustainability, vulnerability, and adaptation.
Through this synthesis of raw matter, experimentation, and reflection, Laura Canal positions herself within a lineage of artists seeking to bridge human experience and the natural world. Her paintings embody both a record of transformation and an invitation: to look closely, to question our impact, and to rediscover the fragile interconnections that sustain life.
