Bergin

Karolina Bergin (b. 1983) is a Polish contemporary artist whose practice centers on portraiture. Working primarily on paper, she combines acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, oil pastels, oil sticks, and dry pastel to build layered surfaces where precision and spontaneity remain in constant dialogue.

Bergin is drawn to the tension between precision and freedom. Carefully observed faces coexist with expressive gestures, dense accumulations of color, and visible traces of the creative process, allowing neither control nor intuition to dominate the image. She often layers multiple colors heavily onto a single area, creating rich visual depth in which realism dissolves into raw material. She uses portraiture to evoke presence rather than simply record appearance. Each work grows from a balance of intuition and control: emotional impulses are gradually shaped by careful observation, while deliberate decisions remain open to chance, gesture, and the materials’ physical qualities.

Paper is central to her practice. Its surface allows her to build, erase, and reveal successive layers, preserving traces of the process as an essential part of the finished work. Rather than concealing change, her paintings allow it to remain visible. Photography-particularly fashion imagery-often provides a starting point, yet the finished works move beyond their source through the act of painting. For selected projects, Bergin invites poetry into the creative process, treating it not as an explanation of the work but as an independent voice that shares the same emotional space.

Bergin received the "Faces & Beauty" category award at the FIDA Awards 2025 and has garnered multiple honors within the competition. Her work was selected for the Portrait 2026 exhibition at the CICA Museum in South Korea and for Al-Tiba9 Contemporary Art’s Digital Interview series.
