Kyuin Baik is a multimedia artist primarily working in oil paintings and photography, with the transfiguration of the notion of “portraiture” in mind. She was born in South Korea where Asian conservative cultures are highly effected. While living within that Asian conservative capitalistic culture, she has witnessed society which individuals’ freedoms are allowed but restricted. Throughout her deep observation about her cultural background, she has wondered how an individuality works and how a group’s power being emphasized over individuals’ characteristics. In a Proustian manner, her work pays homage to her own cultural backgrounds to the literal nature of the culture.
Kyuin has received BFA in 2022 from Cornell University, College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. She won 2nd price in IPA 2017 for Non-Professional, Editorial-Personality and People-culture. She also won Silver prize in TIFA 2017 for Abstract photography. She has participated in multiple group exhibitions at The Johnson Museum, Tjaden Gallery, and Hartell Gallery, Ithaca, NY. Moreover, her work has been included for 12 finalists in Malamegi Lab Rome’22 Edition and exhibited at 28 Piazza di Pietra Fine Art Gallery in Rome, Italy.
