Marea Atkinson is an artist/researcher who lives in Adelaide South Australia. Marea enjoys reflecting on the nature of the universe, including travelling to remote locations specifically to visit astronomical observatories in the Canary Islands, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, historic observatories in Italy and stargazing in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and Central Australia. Her research interests include, the relationship between art and astronomy, the preservation of starlight and notions about the universe. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, USA with additional study in Australia, Asia and Europe. She has collaborated with the UNESCO International Starlight Initiative in Spain and New Zealand 2007-2012, the International Society of Electronic Art in UAE, 2014, presenting papers and exhibitions reflecting on the preservation of starlight and the cultural significance of the night sky in human culture. Marea has established an international art practice, in 2017; she was selected to exhibit Luminescence at the Milan Photo Fait with a series of photographic, digital prints and installation. In 2016, she exhibited Luminous an installation of digital prints at the Pala Expo Verona for the International Triennial of Italy. In 2015, she exhibited in the Electron Salon at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and at the Douro Museum Print Biennale in Portugal and the Museum of Culture in Sphinx The Hidden Festival, Thebes, Greece. In 2014, her work was selected for The Last Paradise exhibition at the Rome Triennial curated by Daniele Radini Tedeschi, with the assistance of Philippe Daverio in Italy and Clicking the Moment The Ephemeral and its Opposite at the Onishi Projects Gallery in New York, curated by Stefania Carrozzini. In 2013, she exhibited The City of Stars installation project at INSAP V111 Conference at Hayden Planetarium and American Museum of Natural History in New York and at the Palermo Biennale in Sicily. Awards and collectionsMarea has received awards for her work from the Italian Art Association, the University of Manchester and the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the Canadian Association of Physicists. Her work is represented in numerous collections including, the Brooklyn Museum, NY, National Gallery of Australia, ACT, Detroit Institute of Art, MI, the Jodrell Bank Observatory UK, and the Peace Museum in Chicago, IL, USA.
