The ‘Ruins project is designed as a virtual memorial to the Dresden Bombing of World War ll that evokes past memories and takes the user back in time through its artistic take on the event. Every space and corner of the design is crafted with concepts extremely contradicting in nature, which reminds the user of the state of the world during a political turmoil. From the old narrative to contemporary and socially engaged voices, it raises historical awareness and recovers what has been lost through visual and aural languages as well as spatial experiences through virtual reality. User experiences in this multi-sensorial virtual architecture space include a variation of daylight factor, a contrast of solid and void, a rusty-colored reflection pond representing the blood of the victims, contrasting materiality with blacks and whites, and the rumbling sound resembling bombing.
‘Ruins’ project is built and executed on a platform called ‘Virtual Bauer Wurster’ developed by XRLab at University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design. This was exclusively made for the students of the school to create and visualize design in real time and experience spaces virtually on a true scale.
