The palenquera is a character, a traditional trade from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. She may well represent the struggle, the thriving, hard-working and cheerful character of a culture that has gone through great difficulties in order to survive, since the colonial era. Historically they come from the first free town in America, Palenque.
The almost playful representation in her fruits expresses the joy that its trade brings to tourists and visitors to the place, and the components of all the clothing as well as the cup known as "basin, punch bowl" an instrument that weighs on their heads but to which they are used to it.
