The Viscous Sea is a six-channel film installation that explores the Dead Sea as a site of ecological disaster. The notion of dying plays a central role in the work. What does it mean for elemental water bodies to die? Can the Dead Sea die again? Who are the actors involved in the events leading up to its decline? And what future awaits the Dead Sea?
The installation weaves together fragmented and spatial screens with a multi-channel sonic soundscape, tracing the journey of an exhausted, dying body as it slowly makes its way to the Dead Sea. As it reaches the Dead Sea, it floats—silently, slowly drifting off, along with questions about its future. It is predicted that the Dead Sea will reach an equilibrium between its salinity and water level, transforming the remaining water into a viscous state, a reminder that we are all within the viscosity that Climate Change brings about.
