QR Core reflects on the transformation of the QR code from a symbol of technological novelty into an almost invisible component of everyday life.
Once associated with innovation and adopted sparingly by companies seeking to project a contemporary image, QR codes have become ubiquitous. They inhabit restaurant menus, advertisements, packaging, tickets, museums, public spaces, and screens of every kind. Through repetition, they have gradually lost their symbolic weight, becoming a form of visual noise—present everywhere and rarely observed.
The work seeks to reveal the QR code in its most instinctive form: not as a tool for accessing information, but as an object perceived by the contemporary eye. Beneath its rigid geometry lies an experience closer to noise than to language.
QR Core positions itself as a counterpoint to growing technological complexity by reintroducing a familiar cultural reference: the static of cathode-ray televisions. For generations, television static represented a liminal image—neither image nor absence of image, neither beginning nor end. It was a suspended time, a liminal moment charged with possibility, but also uncertainty and expectation.
Today, somewhat paradoxically, noise has returned to occupy a central role. In many generative artificial intelligence systems, it constitutes the starting point from which images, forms, and meanings emerge. Even earlier, in the sonic domain, noise served as a material for the synthesis of musical compositions. As a consequence, machines seem to retain a possibility that humans have progressively minimized: the ability to contemplate a simple spacetime—a grounding, a place from which creativity may begin.
By allowing visual noise to emerge from within the structure of the QR code itself, the work establishes a dialogue between two eras of communication: the age of the cathode-ray tube and that of ubiquitous machine-readable symbols. The result is an object suspended between signal and interference, inviting viewers to reconsider what they no longer consciously see.
In QR Core, the QR code ceases to communicate a destination and instead becomes a destination in itself: a meditation on noise, memory, and the visual landscape of the digital age. Technical Note
QR Core was created by combining a standard QR code mask with photographic captures of cathode-ray television static. The noise sequences were acquired from a Samsung SyncMaster T200HD with no antenna signal and subsequently processed through custom software developed specifically for the project.
The software assembles individual frames into an animated composition, filling the QR data regions with television noise while preserving the recognizable structure of the symbol. It also supports the optional inclusion of an actual machine-readable QR code concealed within the animation, allowing attentive viewers to search for a hidden layer of information.
Artificial intelligence contributed primarily to the development and refinement of the software tools employed in the creative process.
