Looking for a Positive Fusion of "Manga" and "Video"
(Search for a visual expression that does not impair the cartoon nature)
This work is a video created under the concept of "a new expression of Manga." The video has two major experimental elements: "maximum use of the panel" and the use of "anime voice-over."
"Maximum use of the panel."
Many cartoon-like video expressions have been created in the past; for example, there have been many videos in which "a cartoon page is projected, then zoomed to a panel, and then to the next panel." This is a dynamic effect, but on the other hand, it is just one of the video techniques, and it weakens the Manga element. When creating this video, I focused on retaining a Manga-like feel without zooming in on the panels, in line with the fact that Manga is expressed on a page-by-page basis. First, I rough-sketched the Manga and then aimed to create compositions and cuts that satisfied the requirements of a page unit.
"Anime voice-over"
Anime characters are composed of "moving pictures (fiction)" and "voices (human)."
Therefore, the voice actors have an "anime contextual way of speaking" from both Manga and real life. In this work, I aggressively incorporated this into the video. As this video uses a highly fictional panel method, it was necessary to give the live-action actors a strong sense of fiction. Therefore, I tried to balance them by giving them an animated voice. I believe it produced an interesting result.
─── As mentioned above, I looked for an upbeat fusion of "Manga x video" in this work. I expected a chemical reaction that would follow the elements of each genre but also deviate from each genre. Remember, this is not a genre mix but rather a genre update for the future. Such experimental videos that do not fit into existing categories should also have the opportunity to become a new category.
As a specific possibility, this technique could be used for "live-action Manga," for example, or it could be applied to viewing Manga on smartphones and other devices in the future.
I expect the possibility that this work will lead to clues or stepping stones to the next stage of Manga expression. As I present this work, I ask the significance and the question, "Is there a drama that can only be conveyed in this way?"
