The film shows the creation process of the
sculpture “newstairsbaby6011960”. It is a licensed reinterpretation of the
sculpture “mother stairs” by Tobias Rehberger, which was created according to
the rules of conceptual art.
The film is a joint work by Petra Schmitt and
Josef Ruppel, with the film idea, editing and image processing being the work
of Petra Schmitt. The sculpture “newstairsbaby6011960” was designed, planned
and realized by Josef Ruppel. Volkmer Gross, Petra Schmitt and Josef Ruppel
accompanied the creation of the sculpture photographically.
The film is structured chronologically and
shows the creation of the sculpture from the initial idea, through the material
and technical considerations and construction, to the final color scheme.
Photographs, sketches, drawings, documents, craft materials and film footage
were combined to document the artistic creation as a mental and creative
process.
The camera shots by Elke Helbig and Petra
Schmitt were taken on the day when the complete sculpture was lifted out of the
workshop with the help of Roland Metzger, Claus Bodensohn and Winfried Ruppel
and the “baby” saw the light of day. In this sequence, the interaction of
craftsmanship, a precise sense of proportion and mechanical power becomes
particularly clear.
As a rhythmic contrast, Ludwig van
Beethoven's Piano Sonata 25, played by Sebastian Lawrenz, accompanies the film.
