Yun (蕴) takes its name from a Chinese character that suggests something held within: a hidden potential, or a quiet strength waiting to emerge. The work is inspired by the moment a seed begins to germinate and pushes through the soil. Rooted in the earth, it draws nourishment from its surroundings, slowly gathering the energy needed for new life.
The piece is made from natural ramie and raw lacquer using the traditional Chinese bodiless lacquer technique. Once the lacquer has taken shape, part of the internal mould is removed, while certain supporting elements are left in place. This gradual opening reflects the seed’s passage from containment into growth, giving physical form to ideas of release, renewal and rebirth.
With its dense, earth-like surface, Yun appears to contain a living force just beneath its exterior. Its restrained form and layered materiality evoke the quiet energy that gathers beneath stillness: hidden, persistent, and ready to break through.
