The undertone makes the sound, not only acoustically but also metaphorically. In a time of subliminal communication and hectic pace, the project Undertones focuses on precisely this.
Undertone is both a generative six-channel audio installation and a performance project. The term is taken literally here. With the help of six underwater microphones, the sound from underwater is transmitted to the surface. The undertones are altered by various audio processing tools to create a spherical soundscape that is played back by six loudspeakers. Visitors can either listen to the strange sounds or actively shape them by trying to set the water in motion, for example by throwing stones into the water or using sticks to create waves.
As a performance project, the water becomes a sequencer and synthesizer. For this purpose, the six microphones are lowered into water-filled vessels. With the help of various audio processing tools, but primarily by physically setting the water in motion, the artist creates a rhythmic technoid noise piece. By mixing the different microphone signals, chords and melodies can be played. An electrifying dark mix of digital effects and physical sound.Relaxation through active listening and focusing on the quiet moments.
The aim of the installation is to make the nuances and subtleties, the inaudible, audible and to encourage visitors to linger. The soundscape changes the atmosphere of this place, which opens up in a completely new way and can be used by passers-by. The performance, on the other hand, is intended to put the audience in a trance and take them on a deep dive into the world of aquatic sounds, the undertone.
