"Architecture, sculpture, glyptics, mosaics and jewelry have done nothing with them. They come from the beginning of the planet, sometimes from another star. In such cases, they bear the torsion of space like the stigma of their terrible fall. They predate man; and man, when he came, did not mark them with the imprint of his art or industry. He did not manufacture them, destining them for whatever trivial, luxurious or historical use. They perpetuate only their own memory."Roger Caillois. Pierres. Gallimard,1971.
For as long as I can remember, I've been bringing back stones from every trip. This practice of gleaning is like a vain attempt to mark a moment, to keep as close as possible something of a memory that tirelessly flees. « Totem for 4 stones » lies at the crossroads of this intimate practice and a broader reflection on stones, their origins and their memorial charge. The piece is largely inspired by the work of French writer and sociologist Roger Caillois.
