Vestiges of Absence

This installation approaches textile not merely as a material but as a vessel of memory, ritual, and cultural transmission, revealing the fragile threshold between presence and absence. Emerging behind a translucent veil, wrapped forms reminiscent of ceremonial headdresses remain suspended between object and body, relic and representation, concealment and revelation. Resistant to fixed identities, these forms do not depict specific individuals; instead, they evoke the lingering traces of lives whose names and narratives have gradually dissolved into collective memory.

At the core of the installation, the textile surface functions as a liminal membrane that simultaneously conceals and reveals. Rather than obstructing vision, the veil delays it, transforming visibility into an unstable and continually deferred encounter. Loose and unraveling fibers extending beyond the fabric register the material effects of time, embodying erosion, transmission, and the persistence of memory beyond physical existence.

Rather than reconstructing historical or sacred symbols, the work examines how inherited forms continue to endure after the narratives that once sustained them have unraveled. Ritual objects are stripped of their original function and re-emerge as images carried by cultural memory—forms that remain recognizable yet ultimately resist complete interpretation. This ambiguity does not signify forgetting; instead, it opens a space where meaning accumulates through layers of time.

As viewers move through the installation, they shift from witnesses to participants in an act of perception. Remembering is no longer understood as the reconstruction of the past but as an embodied encounter with the resonances left by absence. Rather than representing what is invisible, the installation renders invisibility itself experientially tangible, inviting reflection on the fragile continuity between memory and loss, materiality and disappearance.
