Still life. De-Composition
In the
paintings within the genre "still life", a very popular genre in the
'600, there are objects that are invariably repeated in most of the
compositions. Each of them carries a special meaning , often linked to
religious subjects, or has a 'compositional’ function – like a knife, often
used as a ‘guideline' to bring the viewer’s gaze inside the work.
But the
common character to all these works is undoubtedly that of 'impermanence',
because everything you see is ephemeral and perishable.
In my artwork,
individual objects appear physically isolated. The casts, executed with many
layers of Japanese paper, are placed in as many light-boxes. The backlight
highlights the various layers, such as the x-ray images, and helps to convey
that idea of 'immateriality' which is
the deep meaning of a still life.
