Metanoia No.3(from the Semaphore Series)

Employed as a signalling system, semaphores were historically used to convey important information and provide guidance to vessels. Given that many environmental scholars now believe that humanity is in desperate need of guidance to ameliorate planetary health, my desire to express important ecological information by adopting the semaphores basic geometric shapes becomes conceptually relevant.

In addition to the conceptual connotations, these hard-edged, angular forms also provide a visually stimulating contrast on which to encrust an abundance of organic, nature-inspired forms. Pairing contrasting and disparate forms create a visual tension that has the potential to stimulate viewer interest. Visual curiosity encourages investigation which in turn may also promote contemplation and reflection.

At this time of ecological instability, this series of works explores my hope that humanity will look at all of the important environmental health signals and contemplate new ways of navigating a sustainable path forward for itself and the many other kindred species with which we share this precious planet.
