The Kaolin
Loop project was developed at the artistic ceramic workshops in Bolesławiec
(PL) and directly refers to the very source of the region’s ceramic tradition –
the raw materials from which ceramics have been produced for centuries. The
installation is based on textures taken from the storage boxes containing the
components of the stoneware slip: kaolin, various clays, and other minerals.
By
extracting these seemingly ordinary substances from their industrial context,
the work elevates them into the realm of art. Their textures, impressed in oval
forms, are raised on pedestals – transformed into sculptural trophies, symbols
of endurance and of their essential role in ceramic production. Some elements
even acquire a monumental quality, emphasizing the status of the material
without which Bolesławiec ceramics would not exist.
The project
highlights a closed loop: the raw material becomes not only the medium
but also the subject of reflection, while the installation itself becomes part
of the material’s ongoing history. At the same time, the work reminds us that
these resources are finite. Kaolin and clay, so familiar and seemingly abundant
today, may one day be exhausted. Kaolin Loop preserves their imprint –
in both texture and substance – leaving behind an artistic testimony to their
presence.
It is an
installation that bridges industry and tradition, matter and idea, present
and future – while asking how long the very foundations of Bolesławiec’s
ceramic culture will remain available to us.
