Just Machine’s Heart is interactive video sculpture that allows people to show theirs visual identities by looking into it. Video camera, which is implemented in the sculpture, streams video signal to nearby monitor, so audience could see the Identity of that person, but the person isn’t able to see himself in such way.
The work was inspired by the gap between how others see us and how we see ourselves. It reflects on identity, surveillance, and the emotional detachment of modern technology.
We want viewers to feel exposed, but also curious — to question how much of their identity is shaped by others, and how little they truly see of themselves.
We used analog cameras for their connection to memory and permanence. Shaping them into a heart merges emotion with observation, while the raw, mechanical look reflects the tension between the human and the machine.
