Description:
Hanging hand-blown glass panel, airbrushed with vitreous enamels and sandblasted with scripts. Laminated on carrier glass, framed with aluminum rails and adjustable steel ropes.
Idea
The art work
reflects on the co-existence of humanity regardless of ethnicity. The awareness
for one’s own vitality and mortality unifies all humans in an eternal cycle of
growth and decay. The fragile nature of the coloured glass is symbolic of
diversity, transformability and in turn the fragility of human existence.
Inspiration
I am fascinated
by how our personalities are influenced by ethnicity and socialization. This is
mainly due to my own background of being born and bred in former East Germany. My interest deepened during a trip to Marrakech, where I was
mesmerized by Arabic scripts and the ancient Berber language Tamazight. It
opened my eyes to how our mother tongue shapes our cultural identity.
This inspired me to develop an artistic interpretation of individual cultural
identity by using scripts from different parts of the world to form the
statement “I am”.
Concept
I have designed
the piece to interact with light and time of day. When the panel is placed in a
south facing window, sunrays will go through the glass thus creating delicate
colours and structures on the floor below as well as reflecting the circle of
scripts.
The art work can also be displayed in front of a wall - spotlights in front of the glass panel will then reflect colours and the intricate shades of the scripts onto the wall behind.
