We were inspired by the urban skyline that you can see in Seoul, the capital of Korea. The skyline of Seoul can represent Korea as Seoul, which has undergone rapid modernization, has become high and low buildings. The skyline's high and low-level differences were shaped and the traditional techniques of Geum-bu and Ott-chil were used to show the harmony between tradition and modern. 'Ot' is a pure Korean word meaning sap or poison extracted from lacquer tree stems or branches. Since lacquer tree grows well everywhere in Korea, it has long been using lacquer by mixing natural dye with sap taken from it. It not only colors but also acts as an eco-friendly preservative against temperature and humidity. So it was used a lot in furniture. However, the production process is tricky because it requires painting and drying several times and is sensitive to temperature and humidity when drying. Geum-bu is made into thin pieces by tapping or rolling gold. In Korea, it has been used for various designs of hanbok or for wooden Buddhist statues. We put Ott-chil(lacquer) on the outside to make it durable and to make sure that remains unchanged for a long time. Inside, the work was done with Geum-bu and candles were used to further maximize the angles of the sides of the object with light. Through this work, We hope to see the harmony between tradition and modernity. And also not forget the technique of tradition and to be handed down for a long time in the future.
