Gryffovotes is part of the Gryffes series of Fantawatt - an artistic project in public space, in Paris, that aims to graft sculptures onto Parisian candelabras (street lamps from 1870).
Process and concept :
The creative process first involves taking soberly clandestine imprints of candelabras in public spaces. Plaster molds are then created from these imprints. The ceramic is applied in slabs onto the molds. The parts of the imprints are assembled to form the sculpture. After firing, the Arduino electronic circuit is integrated. The sculpture triggers a phenomenon, an attraction, a phantasmagoria related to energy and electricity in the city. The sculpture is then performed in public spaces, grafted on the candelabra with the original patterns. An aluminum clamping ring allows for hanging. The candelabra is increased and becomes a magical urban totem. On this occasion, the project was officially selected by the White Night 2025 to be shown in situ with the town hall of the 15th arrondissement of Paris. For a night, visitors were invited to interact with the artwork on candelabras, using a paper guide and a map.
However, sculptures can also be presented as futuristic artifact of Paris, during exhibitions.
Triggered phenomenon of Gryffovotes :
This ceramic collects points. It displays mysterious futuristic questions on the screen that you can "vote" on. Press the button once to vote "Yes," twice to vote "No." The questions scroll twice; wait patiently to move on to the next question. The votes are tallied and will be collected by the artist for the rest of the project. ex: "Will there still be candelabras in 100 years?" "Should we unplug Internet once a century?"
