The “Gatekeeper” is a wood carving that was made over the course of a year. The process of carving allows for meditation and refinement. The idea for the carving was to embody a spirit of our times. The spirit that took shape is a greedy and predatory spirit that is very alive today. To embody these themes I chose a bird of prey and fingers. The multiple fingers I find suggest a number of body’s present, not of a single figure. The man’s face in the middle suggest the face of this spirit as it is seen in our world. After finishing the carving I cast it in bronze. The wood grain still visible in metal.
