When making the Post Colonial quilt, my studio floor was filled with plastic plant off-cuts as a result of repeatedly cutting squares. They became the pieces that didn't fit, discarded on the floor. It made me think about systems and structures the U.S. was built on—systems and structures that many inherently don't fit into. The map is partially filled in, leading viewers to often wonder 'why?' or generating a feeling of confusion, incompletion, and contemplation—wondering why certain areas are filled in and not others. This consideration is inherent to the question I ask myself about these "off-cut" pieces: "Why are some chosen and not others?" "Why do some fit, but not others?"
The incomplete map also represents the liminal moment of uncertainty the U.S. and its citizens find themselves in.
