From my series, Sugarcoated America. I make sculptures using non-art materials, and then photograph them, in this case with 4 x5 film. This series was made by covering American cultural objects or concepts with sprinkles. I sourced ones made from petroleum-derived paraffin, and artificial colors. We ingest them, but they should not be considered as food or nutrition. These are about the colorful, candy-coated lies we tell ourselves about America. Like a game of telephone, they get repeated and form a sort of hard, rigid shell. It protects to a degree, but can also function as a confinement or limitation.
