Photo of the Semois, a river that runs through the Belgian and French Ardennes.
This image is taken from a photographic series published in the magazine Sabato. It questions both the beauty and the extreme fragility of the Semois, the double face of a river shaken by global warming. At times a place of peace and rejuvenation for man, it can turn into a deadly torrent for the population in a few hours.
Almost dry this summer, it was dangerously overflowing a year earlier. A few dozen kilometres further north, the Vesdre River also overflowed, creating deadly floods. A disaster that Nicolas Becquet covered for his media.
As a striking contrast, the low water level during the summer of 2022 has magnified the dance of the coloured algae. A reality as graphically beautiful as it is ecologically challenging. The pictorial strength of the image becomes the starting point for a wider questioning.
This image reflects Nicolas Becquet's work, which consists of taking a step back to offer new, questioning and picturesque points of view. Passionate about images and photography, he questions his environment with the help of his drone. His photos taken vertically create unusual and disconcerting representations of the territories he explores.
The work on shapes and the play on materials and lights generate abstract images, which are similar to painting. The aim here is to break with traditional representations of landscapes seen from the sky.
