Spine

This work belongs to my series Cracks in My Flowers. I depict a figure from behind, her arm raised and her face turned away, her spine like a stem at the heart of a dense Baroque bouquet. I let peonies in cream, blush, and deep rose press against her skin until body and flower share the same soft, luminous flesh. I treat the surface with cracks, dust, and patina so the image feels like an old master's canvas surfacing from darkness.

I lay a single thick stroke of crimson acrylic—hand-painted and scanned into the composition—across the small of her back. I want this mark to read as both wound and adornment: it interrupts the tender continuity of her skin, grounding the dreamlike scene in something physical and raw. It is the precise point where my painting and my photography fuse.
