A complicated subtitle for an increasingly complex world. The source material for this work on 134 x 347 cm canvas is a cell phone photo taken in 2019 from an altitude of approximately 12,500 meters on a flight from Yangon to Doha. It was an unforgettable moment to see our beautiful blue planet from this height, the Strait of Hormuz with its mangrove-lined shores, the arrow-shaped island of Qeshm in the Persian Gulf, which belongs to Iran. Since then, I have wanted to use this photograph. For this exhibition, I was inspired by the political narrative of the current American president, his autocratic-fantastic demeanor reminiscent of his “friend” Putin, and his decree renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, inspired me to edit and squeeze the original photograph, which was originally in beguiling shades of blue, turquoise, and light ochre, with brushstrokes and solid colors.
