As a child, I spend many happy summers on the Waddeneilanden, the islands in the north of the Netherlands. However, due to climate change, the sea level will rise and the islands are in danger of disappearing under water. So I photographed life on the beaches with an antique wooden camera. Looking at these pictures, I feel I am looking at a world that already belongs to the past. Trying to express my melancholy about the beautiful, disappearing islands, I overlaid the photographs with my oilpaintings of the North Sea, letting the paintings wash over the pictures until they disappear.
