This photo was taken in my hometown of Trieste, the city of the Bora wind and the final stop on the Balkan Route for thousands of migrants every year. Beyond this barbed-wire fence lies the abandoned area of the Old Port, where migrants hide to survive. There is an access point to the pebble beach where they light fires to keep warm, cook and wash their clothes, hanging them out to dry on the rocks: then the Bora wind comes along and scatters everything about, even the clothes. The city welcomes them but lacks the resources to help them all. Near the fence there was a bonfire burning and a great deal of hunger.
