Mining institutional archives and oft-overlooked imagery; banal and disparate moments are combined to create violent yet beautiful reproductions. ‘Olivia’, Claudia, Vanessa and Celeste are part of the 2018 series ‘Be Polite’ and ‘Don’t Dribble When You Drool’; these consist of five portraits which interrogate idealised images of femininity from the late twentieth century. The traditional portrayal of passive female figures is held to scrutiny. By creating new images from old images, the photographs are both in and out of time; elusive qualities are formed by the complex layering of historical and cultural references which generate new expressive and aesthetic potentials.
