This work depicts the winter scenery at the Tsugaru channel in Japan. The work was executed in Chinese ink on Xuan (rice) paper. The imagery is fully abstract and does not reference to any physical aspect of the scenery, except maybe the sense of bitter coldness and vast span of ice-covered land. The work is inspired by the Japanese Enka of the same name. The song goes something like this:
When I debarked the train that had left from Ueno Aomori station covered in snow All these people returning home to the North are silent So I listen only to the rumbling sea
I, too, am alone as I board the ferry I look upon the seagulls calling out and cry Oh, the winter scenery at the Tsugaru Strait
