This painting depicts a procession of Lyon football supporters, gathered behind flags in the heraldic colors of the city. Their attitudes, at once solemn and trivial, are set in dialogue with a second group of policemen, aligned in counterpoint and frozen within the archway of the stadium entrance. The frontal and architectural composition recalls medieval processional frescoes and liturgical stagings, while transposing them into the profane and conflictual universe of sport and the “ultra” subculture.
By exploring the correspondence between medieval heraldry and contemporary identity symbols, the work questions the persistence of the sacred within secular societies. The supporters’ flags, colors, and emblems function here as modern banners, unconsciously reenacting the communal and martial rituals of past centuries.
Through this juxtaposition, the painting seeks to reveal how anonymous figures and collective gestures can acquire a quasi-liturgical dimension. It explores the ways in which today’s societies continue to produce images of devotion, shared mythologies, and new forms of collective icons.
