The idea was born at the beginning of the pandemic and lockdown, when remote communication discovered a new life, and its importance was amplified and enriched with more urgent meanings. From this arose a reflection and the inevitable translation into images of what, at the time, seemed to be the most immediate glue between people. The research then expanded to include different meanings and questions that infiltrated the artistic process.
The project has not yet been presented to any industry professionals, perhaps because I still consider it a work in progress, and perhaps because, having been conceived during a period of "isolation," broader dissemination seemed out of context. However, every artistic endeavor, no matter how personal and intimate, needs engagement with others, which is why I want to show what I have conceived and realized so far.
From a creative standpoint, the project can be seen as a revival or connection with the Pop Art movement, where the artwork becomes "accessible" to everyone in terms of appreciation (or understanding) due to its immediately recognizable subject. The artwork is, therefore, an expression of the collective imagination and a symbol of the emerging post-war consumer society.
In the Re-Pop project, I replace the everyday object with the everyday language of emojis. These too are immediately recognizable and serve as a new, abbreviated language made up of image-symbols that express emotions, events, and even social affiliations. The intent is to explore the potential of these tiny pictograms, starting by overturning their scale and enlarging them to understand the artistic value they can express (also from an aesthetic perspective).
By using them as a visual language and distorting their original meaning, I compose them to create new situations and contexts.
