The Maltese Centaury is a part of the Mechanical Botanical drawing series. Each piece from the series functions as a schematic blueprint for a synthetic mechanical replacement. The national plant of Malta was selected for replacement due to its inclusion on the endangered species list. My work focuses on environmental themes and drawing attention to the affects of climate change. What will we do if plant life can no longer exist on the face of the earth? Will we need to create artificial versions in this plausible dystopian future? Complete functionality and the recreation of natural plant behavior is important to each piece in the series. The blueprint for the artificial Maltese Centaury allows for multiple abundant blossom and foliage growth while transforming sunlight into energy to power a dehumidifier that provides the water required to initiate the pumps for foliage production and bud blooming . Specific design decisions were made to allow for installation within the current natural habitat of the Maltese Centaury which is found on the edge of sea cliffs surrounding the Mediterranean island.
