This painting is from a series about the tides of Venice. The colours are an impressionistic representation of the memories I have of the location. I use abstract expressionism techniques such as soak stain, splatter, dry brush, dragging and pouring to achieve a sense of movement, here to represent waves, wind, sea, sky and other elements of the landscape. Venice is very much affected by the sea and it's tides. The rising sea levels, the increased traffic on the water and deteriorating marshland all contribute to the ever increasing high tide events that wreak havoc on the islands of the Veneto and the historic landmarks that are so integral to them. The city's beautiful waters, visually stimulating landscapes and destructive tides are all themes that interplay within this series.
