‘Shadow’ series of multimedia works by Oh Myung Hee explores and questions ideas surrounding the female gaze, using the moon, and lunar symbology as a central theme. Inspired by the inevitability of perpetual transformation of the shape, colour ant texture, this artistic quest is tightly connected to Oh Myung Hee’s previous exploration of ‘Moondance’, habitually performed by women in Korea on a full moon, one night in a month when they can be who they chose to be, sing and dance without restrictions and judgement.
Traditionally associated with womanhood, femininity, mystery and the sublime, artistic interpretation of the moon and its mysterious shadow have been taken by the artist as a starting point of her contemplation on diverse perspectives and narratives that arise from it. Through traversing social, cultural, and historical notions of femininity, Shadow series offer a meditation on multiplicity of lived experiences and existence. It celebrates women’s enduring presence and influence in the creative realm, highlighting their significant contribution to shaping the artistic expression throughout history. The fusion of artistic vision and thought inspiring discourse in ‘Shadow’ series delves into the complexities surrounding the cultural dynamics, symbolism, diverse perspectives and representation. The contemplative journey in these works of art initiates a conversation that goes beyond mere aesthetic contemplation, challenging the traditional relegation of women and offering, like moon shadows, multiplicity of possibilities.
