Series title:
Russian Neo-Suprematism
A series of paintings created immediately after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. It is about the collapse of values.
Suprematism as an artistic movement originated in Russia in 1915-1916. It was a powerful phase of Russian modern art and became crucial for Western art as well. It carried a strong dimension of freedom. Malevich's painting Black Square on a White Background is rightly considered not only the pinnacle of this movement, but also a landmark work in the history of modern art.
In the context of the current war, started by Russia in 2014, and its total war since 2022, the black square has taken on a new dimension for me.
It is a burned-out window. A symbol of destruction that is destroying not only Ukrainian culture, but also Russian culture.
It is a modern void.
