Toward the Sky, Through Water grows from my long-term interest in memory, perception, and inner emotional landscapes. It was created after many years of living in Sri Lanka, where the Indian Ocean shaped my daily experience of colour, light, and rhythm.
The starting point for the painting was the sensation of looking up while underwater. Through the moving surface, the sky becomes close but unreachable; light breaks, colours shift, and the body feels suspended between two elements.
The work is built in layers of oil paint: fluid transparent areas, dense textured passages, natural drips, and broad brushstrokes that echo the movement of water. Parts of the canvas remain unpainted, acting like sudden flashes of brightness under the surface.
The palette of deep blue, lilac, and burgundy does not describe the ocean literally. It evokes a sensory and psychological state: floating, looking upward, being held by water while moving toward light.
