Pier One
Oil Painting on Canvas
1968
Surrealist vision of one pier holding valuable resources which are unattainable to the masses. The artist uses abstract shapes to depict ships and people in a chaotic struggle to reach the only pier to access the frenzied overpopulated city. The pier and waterfront blend with the urban landscape in the background to show an apocalyptic tableau of conflict over scarce resources. The use of colour is reminiscent of a circus-like landscape highlighting the absurdity of the chaos in a civilised society. Whimsy is in play amongst pandemonium.
