Permesso di Soggiorno
This project comprises of portraits of citizens from African countries, such as from Senegal, Nigeria, and Sudan. Each have decided to leave their country and find refuge in Italy. Some have come with their families and others alone.
Interesting to observe is that during the day many are in conversation on their mobile phones with their families, often with FaceTime.
When arriving in Italy they are granted a visa and then apply for a permesso di soggiorno. Local councils encourage them to enrol in a language school to attending 10 weeks of tuition to obtain a certificate that afterwards facilitates employment.
Work for the newly arrived immigrants is primarily connected to tourism. In cities they might find have ambulatory jobs which include the sales of clothes, jewellery, and books, whilst along coastal resorts beach ware is sold.
Earnings are shared with families back in Africa, sent monthly, for example in the region of 300 euros. The winters provide little work, the employment greater during the summer holiday months.
A greater part of the portrait sitters have a pecuniary lifestyle and share cramped accommodation, often eight to a room and in bunk beds.
The portrait project comprises of two panels, one with nine males and the other nine females. They came from various parts of Italy, namely Genova, Lecce, Palermo, and Lampadusa.
