This painting was captured live in
the dance studio at Rambert Dance Company in London at a session called
Playground. The choreographer Irene Cioni directed a group on a concept of
pairs of dancers mirroring then flying low and passing through. I work in the moment
capturing dance movement as it happens in front of me. The painted marks using Chinese
ink and acrylics on paper are a response to the dancer’s expression and
movement through space. The combined painted marks captured of combined dance
sequences form an accumulation of information that acts as a record of the feel
and expression in summary form. I use a combination of brushes using a wet and
dry brush technique to describe the dance language in painted form. The
paintings composition is improvised in real time like a jazz players
riff. The dance performance and experience dictate the paintings formation and
progress to completion. I only stop a painting once the story has been told by
the dancers.
