Any viewer of paintings will also be from a world saturated with images, many of them with commercial interpretation and any symbol or icon will stimulate memory sated with other messaging. My process aims to remove both the frame and the icon so that the viewer is asked to look without seeing but feeling. I create the final work from sketchbooks created en plain air, usually in watercolour, as a colour and subject reference. All the work is on aluminium panels and are unframed. Most have an initial enamel ground, followed by thin oil glazes which create the volume in the painting. Once the glaze has dried, it is usually lightly sanded before the application of the next glaze. Some glazes, particularly later ones, are applied and then semi removed with rag before fully drying. As the drying oil cannot soak into the aluminium substrate, each glaze takes days, sometimes weeks to dry. Most paintings take several months to complete
