It is based on a photograph I took while traveling in Japan. This is an oil painting. When I was thinking about how to represent this Japanese cultural symbol, I got my inspiration from a computer graphic that I did a few years ago, i.e., through a large number of short strokes. This can be an effective way to express the sky, the mountain, and the lake. The blurry scene in the distance can also be separated from the nearby Otorii by the different directions and the connections of the short strokes. The golden footpath in the picture also becomes clear, then gradually disappears into the lake through Otorii. The mysterious rotation of the sky reflects the significance of Otorii as a symbol of the separation between human and divine in the traditional Japanese culture.
