This work was initially conceived as an interior painting, identical in composition to Gustav Klimt’s original. However, its meaning evolved during the process of its creation.
I began the piece in January 2022 while preparing for a German language examination required for full admission to the Technical University of Vienna. By early February, I had successfully enrolled. Yet, after attending only one day, I was forced to withdraw due to unfolding global events.
This artwork does not carry a political or social agenda. Instead, it reflects the emotional landscape of an ordinary student who, at the age of 27, learned German from scratch in pursuit of a master’s degree in Austria, endured the challenges of relocating during the COVID-19 pandemic, and navigated the psychological strain of isolation.
The piece embodies a complex bouquet of emotions—disappointment, resilience, forgiveness. Despite the sense of injustice, it speaks to an inner strength: the ability to let go, to preserve respect for a culture once deeply admired, and to continue moving forward.
Materially, the work combines textured acrylic paste, a foil background engraved with words, painted satin ribbon, acrylic paints, and adhesive—forming a layered surface that mirrors the emotional depth of the experience.
