Many are the names of the
highest mountains on the planet or their local synonyms, Everest is known as
Deodungha, "Sacred Mountain", as Chomolungma "Mother Goddess of
the Universe" or Sagarmatha "Head of earth that touches the
sky". To Kanchenjunga as "Five Snow
Treasures".
It is one of the most
extraordinary ecosystems on the planets, however, throughout the Himalayas and
especially on Everest, its magnificent beauty is being altered, the
environmental footprint that the tons of accumulated waste are leaving by the
men and women who visit it is disgusting. Every year fluorescent tents,
discarded climbing equipment, gas and air cans, the remains of supplies and
materials that are almost impossible to recycle are abandoned, all littered
with human excrement that litters the route. They disappear with the annual
snowfalls that get dirty again and in the thaw the accumulation of waste is
revealed year after year.
My works reflect
on this untenable and dangerous situation both for the mountain range and for
humanity. Of abstract and gestual invoice, they are crossed by stripes
of flat colors that produce a strangeness and cut off the possibility of
perceiving pristine nature. The
fringes are the humans well equipped, educated, well off, but leaving behind
tons of brightly collared filth.
