I, Submerged is about finding peace of mind, so in a way the work is trying to be about nothing, which is impossible. I float and submerge myself in water and like a toddler discovering its own hands, I see my legs and feet, each time slightly differently. Sometimes the horizon is slanted, or there is a storm on land, but my body tries to stay calm, perhaps the ripples on the water suggest something else. My work is about finding balance within myself. It is all that I can do.
I am also interested in marine life and have swam with all kinds of fish over the years in the Bahamas, fevers of stingrays , iridescently coloured parrot fish even sharks, some of my paintings are simply an ode to their uniqueness and a fleeting moment of connection.
Occasionally when I submerge myself completely I can see something new emerge through my underwater photography, I see a dissolving of myself …the self that has taken a lifetime to construct! I find that freeing. I also play with the juxtaposing tales from our culture such as the little mermaid or the tale of the fisherman ‘s wife, the painting by Hokusi.
