Legend says that an epoch-making man was borne in ancient times, and his name was Fu Xi. In was in the barbarism age, when human beings had to fight for their survivals against thunderstorms, floods and other natural hazards, as well as savage monsters or dreadful diseases. What Fu Xi did, however, was sit on top of the mountain and ponder over the mystery of the universe. Looking up, he observed the movement of the sun, moon, and stars; looking down, he studied the patterns of the mountains and valleys. He examined himself constantly, over the course of months and years and under all circumstances. One day, all of a sudden, he felt something in his heart and had an epiphany. There was a glow in his flashing eyes as he decoded the “harmony between man and nature”. Everything became simple and clear: the world consists only of Yin and Yang. That’s where
my painting huà originated – the famous Yin and Yang symbol in China. The symbol was painted in black and white, but I asked myself: was that due to the limitation of painting materials at that time? what would Yin and Yang look like today, if a modern artist like me, does the painting? With this question in my mind, I started my meditation.
“Fu Xi’s painting of the Eight Trigrams separated heaven from earth and created the world, and his philosophy runs through ancient and modern times.” From the earth comes the feminine strength, and from the heaven the masculine strength. When you look at my painting, you can see abstract images of the side faces of a man and a woman. The feminine strength comes from the earth, which embraces everything and nurtures everything on the earth. Drawn from heaven, the masculine strength is like the sun, which is the origin of everything, the “source” of all sources. When painting huà, after finishing the first draft with the color of rainbows and the S-shape of Ying and Yang, I spread countless unpolished crystal beads on the bottom layer. Crystal is from the earth, carrying the energy of the earth and the traces of natural changes. I spread the crystal beads, and then poured a layer of resin, and waited for it to dry. Surprisingly, when I came back to it the next day, I found the bodies of insects of different species and different sizes. They fused together with the resin perfectly. It was unprecedented, as usually there were not so many insects in the studio – I saw one or two insects there once in a while; not to mention that they came together on one painting over one night. I was amazed by this; in the meanwhile, it got me to think about the feminine and masculine strengths while gazing at their faces.
I drew a lot of inspiration from Ms. Jacqueline Sa’s Exultation Erotic Tales of Divine Union for this topic. Hereby I want to share with you a passage from the book, Earth’s Revelations (A tribute to the Conscious Convergence on July 18, 2010), to better elaborate the concept of energy in my paintings:“Love, the Amrita of life effervescence, emanating from the crystalline core of me, has always been fused with light of the Sun’s luminescence. He is my beloved, my consort-your life progenitor. My unconditional love nurtures his brilliance; Our seed in each other completes the human circuitry, matrix of Heaven on Earth’s conscious destiny. FEMININE STRENGTH-fused with my quantum patterns, when broken through illusions of subservience or manipulation, you become vessels of love, forgiveness and compassion. Masculine strength-fused with the Sun’s radiance, when shedding skins of the serving knights’ controllers or dominators, you remember your rightful place as life giving protectors and lovers. Creative alchemy of the Sun in Male Activates the ambrosia of Earth in Female.”
Masculine and feminine, Yin and Yang, heaven and earth. Where does Ying and Yang come from? Where does everything originate? Huà represents my meditation over Yin and Yang in the Chinese culture. Literally, Yang means the side towards the sun, and Yin refers to the side away from the sun. They are also used to refer to the human genders. The intercourse between a man and a woman is not only lust, but it also reflects the two types of strengths and their act on human beings. When a man and a woman are together, heaven and earth meet and everything is born, and that’s what Huà stands for .
